Installation and Construction Considerations
Proper installation is critical to ensuring the performance of an
HDPE geomembrane liner.
· Subgrade Preparation: The foundation must be carefully
prepared—it should be smooth, compacted, and free of sharp objects
like stones, roots, or debris that could puncture the membrane .
· Welding and Seaming: Panels of HDPE geomembrane are typically
joined together using thermal fusion welding (either dual-track or
extrusion welding) to create continuous, strong, and watertight
seams. This process requires specialized equipment and trained,
certified technicians .
· Quality Assurance: After welding, every seam must be tested for
integrity. Common non-destructive test methods include air pressure
testing for dual-track seams. Destructive tests are also performed
on sample seams to verify strength .
· Protection: Once installed, the geomembrane often needs to be
protected. This can involve covering it with a layer of soil or a
geotextile (a non-woven fabric) to protect it from punctures, UV
exposure, and mechanical damage during and after construction .
